Retirement is supposed to be the quiet part of life. For plenty of people in the Mother City, though, it turns out to be the part where they finally have time to ask the questions they never got round to asking. That is exactly the space the University of the Third Age Cape Town, better known as U3A, was built to fill.
If you have heard the name and wondered whether it is a real university, whether you need a degree to join, or what it costs, this guide answers all of that in plain language.
What Is the University of the Third Age in Cape Town?
Despite the name, it is not a university in the sense of lecture halls, exams and certificates. The “third age” simply means the stage of life after your working years. As one East London member explained it, the first age is growing up, the second is working for a living, and the third begins when you retire.
The idea started in Toulouse, France, in the early 1970s and spread across Europe, the UK, Australia, Canada and beyond. It reached South Africa through Cape Town around the turn of the century, and the Cape Town branches marked 25 years of lifelong learning at the Baxter Theatre in August 2025.
It is a non-profit, volunteer-driven movement. Members teach, members organise, and members learn. There is no entrance test and no age-related grade to chase.

Is There One U3A or Several Across Cape Town?
This is the question most people search for first, and the honest answer is: several. Rather than one central campus, Cape Town runs a network of local branches. Reports on the 25th anniversary named branches in places such as Athlone, the Atlantic Seaboard, Bloubergstrand, Delft, False Bay, Gugulethu, Helderberg, Mitchells Plain, Tygerberg and the Cape Winelands, with others reaching into the Overberg and the Garden Route.
In practice, you pick the branch closest to where you live. Two examples show how different the experience can be:
- U3A Tygerberg serves the northern suburbs, including Durbanville, Bellville, Kenridge, Stellenberg, Kraaifontein and Kuils River. It holds a general meeting with a guest speaker on the second Thursday of most months, with tea and coffee from 09:00 and the talk starting shortly after 10:00. You can see how it describes itself on the U3A Tygerberg website.
- U3A Atlantic Seaboard runs weekly Thursday morning talks. At the time of a 2024 report, those meetings had moved to Sea Point Place, and membership also opened the door to wider Cape Town courses. Details were covered by the Atlantic Sun.
Venues and days can change, so always confirm with your branch before turning up.
What Can You Actually Do There?
This is where U3A surprises people. Speaker mornings are only the start. Branches run interest groups that look more like a well-stocked community centre than a classroom. Depending on where you join, groups have included:
- Birding and nature walks, plus hiking for the moderately fit
- Bridge, Scrabble, board and card-game mornings
- Yoga and circle dancing
- French for beginners, German conversation and Xhosa for beginners
- Creative writing, a non-fiction book club and current affairs discussion
- Music appreciation, armchair travel, neuroscience and wine appreciation
Not every branch offers every group, so treat this as a taste rather than a menu. The upside is that members of one branch can often join activities beyond their own area.

How Much Does It Cost?
Costs are deliberately low. U3A Tygerberg, for example, describes most group sessions as needing only a nominal fee of around R5 to R10, with any meals or entrance fees paid by the individual. Annual membership fees differ by branch, so ask for the current figure when you enquire. Think of it less as tuition and more as a contribution toward hall hire and tea.
Who Can Join?
Retirees and semi-retirees are the core audience, but branches are generally welcoming to anyone close to retirement who has daytime freedom. There are no qualifications required. If you left school at fifteen or hold three degrees, you will be treated the same, and that mix is part of the charm. People who spent forty years in accounting end up in the same bridge group as former teachers and nurses.
Why It Works: The Real Benefit Is Not the Courses
Ask long-time members what they value, and the answer is rarely a specific topic. It is the rhythm. A reason to leave the house on a Thursday, a familiar face at the tea table, a speaker who makes you argue with your neighbour afterwards. Retirement can shrink a person’s world quietly. A weekly commitment, even a small one, pushes back against that.
It also keeps your mind working. Learning a few phrases of French or following a talk on neuroscience asks something of you, and that is the point.

How to Join the University of the Third Age Cape Town
- Choose your area. Look for the branch nearest your suburb.
- Make contact. Use the branch website or committee contact details to ask about the next general meeting.
- Visit once before paying. Most people decide within a morning.
- Pick two or three groups. Do not overload yourself in the first month.
- Consider volunteering. Branches are run by members and often welcome new committee help, or people willing to lead a group on something they know well.
If you are a family member helping a parent or grandparent look into this, going along to the first meeting together can ease the nerves.
